Welcome to OUR Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

In this blog, and on our support social media platforms on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, we'll be diving deep into the history of the seminal film -- be it the original 1977 version, the 1980 Special Edition, the 1998 Director's Cut or theatrical re-releases.

We'll be looking at the making of the films and the collectibles that have sprung up from it. Be ready and comfortable about sharing your opinions. And hopefully we'll progress to even bigger and better things, but I don't want to get ahead of myself. In the meantime, let's have fun talking about a favorite flick!!

Most importantly of all, as fans and as humans, it's important to note we are not alone!

Melinda Dillon may not be a household name. Well, she is in my household, but not in the world at large in the strictest sense of that term.  The actress was in blockbusters and beloved family movies, award grabbers and cult films. But she's perhaps best known as Ralphie's mom from A Christmas Story or the mother of the little boy who gets abducted in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.  That characterization doesn't do Melinda justice, though. If you scour social media in the wake of the news surfacing that she passed away on Jan. 9 at age 83, you'll see virtually every genre and so many film and television projects referenced. Diary of a TV rewatch

Truth be told, I don't remember the first time I saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind. What I do recall is watching it every time it was broadcast on ABC. I could tell you when the commercial breaks happen. And the TV version is the only one which pumps up the audio on the original finding of planes in the desert. I've listened for that on every reissue that has come out since -- in theaters and at home. And none of them give the excited extras examining the pristine planes their moment in the spotlight, their dialogue is buried under John Williams' brilliant score. So when my friend Adam Long of Movie Geeks United said he'd send me a copy of CE3K from an original ABC broadcast -- with commercials! -- I obviously couldn't wait for it to arrive. I couldn't wait to settle in with some popcorn and some pop and watch my favorite film of all time the way I did when I received the implanted visions.
